How Optical Flow Motion Blur Works

Native After Effects motion blur requires calculated keyframe velocities. However, for imported 3D footage, pre-rendered CGI, stop-motion clips, or complex nested precomps, native motion blur cannot calculate pixel movement.

ReelSmart Motion Blur (RSMB) by RE:Vision Effects analyzes pixel vectors between consecutive frames using optical flow algorithms and applies physically accurate direction-sensitive motion blur automatically.

  • Blur Amount: Keep between 0.40 and 0.65 for a standard 180-degree cinematic shutter angle simulation. Higher values (1.0+) create unnatural smearing.
  • Motion Sensitivity: Set to 70–85% to prevent static background pixels from blurring when small foreground elements zip past.

Eliminating Edge Tearing & Smearing Glitches

When high-contrast objects cross in front of detailed backgrounds, optical flow tracking can produce warped edge artifacts:

  1. Isolate foreground elements onto separate precomps whenever possible.
  2. Use RSMB Pro with a tracking matte mask to tell the plugin where the foreground subject boundary ends.
  3. Increase Tracking Sensitivity in the advanced parameters tab to force tighter pixel correlation.

Using 3D Motion Vector Passes in RSMB Pro
