Premiere Pro Color Grading: Lumetri Color, Scopes & Cinematic LUTs

Transform flat, washed-out Log footage into rich, cinematic imagery using Lumetri Color and professional scopes.

1. Reading Lumetri Scopes (Never Grade by Eye Alone)

Computer monitors vary wildly in brightness and color calibration. Professional colorists rely on objective scopes (Window > Lumetri Scopes):

  • Waveform (YC No Chroma): Measures luminance from 0 (pure black) to 100 (pure clipping white). Keep shadows between 5–10 IRE and highlights below 95 IRE to prevent clipping.
  • Vectorscope (YUV): Measures color hue and saturation. Ensure skin tones align along the diagonal Skin Tone Line (between Yellow and Red) regardless of ethnicity.

2. Step-by-Step Basic Correction

  1. Use the White Balance Eye Dropper on a neutral white or 18% grey card in your footage.
  2. Adjust Exposure and Contrast so the Waveform spans smoothly across the 10–90 IRE range.
  3. Lower Highlights to recover cloud detail in skies, and lift Shadows to reveal detail in dark clothing.

3. Creative Color Looks & Applying LUTs

Under the Creative tab, apply a 3D LUT from our Free LUTs Collection. Always dial the LUT Intensity slider down to 60–75% for a natural, non-overpowering aesthetic. Use RGB Curves to introduce subtle cyan in the shadow toe and warm amber in the highlight shoulder.

4. HSL Secondary: Perfecting Skin Tones

Use the HSL Secondary eyedropper to isolate human skin tones. Smooth the selection mask with Blur and Denoise, then adjust Temperature and Tint to give your talent healthy, radiant skin tones without affecting the surrounding background environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

An Input LUT (Basic Correction tab) converts raw/log color space (like Sony S-Log3) into standard Rec.709. A Creative LUT (Creative tab) adds a stylized cinematic color grade.

This is the well-known QuickTime gamma 1.96 shift bug. Apply a gamma compensation LUT on export to ensure consistent contrast across all players.
