Why Optical Flares Outperforms Native Lens Flares

Adobe’s stock Lens Flare effect is fixed, 2D, and cannot interact with 3D cameras. Designing a Custom Anamorphic Flare

  1. Apply Optical Flares to a black solid and open the Options designer.
  2. Clear the default preset and add an Anamorphic Streak element. Set Aspect Ratio to 0.05 for a horizontal blue/cyan laser streak.
  3. Add a soft Glow Ball for central light radiance and 3–5 Iris polygon elements simulating lens aperture blades.
  4. Add a Chroma Ring element along the outer periphery to simulate internal lens glass reflection dispersion.

3D Light Tracking & Dynamic Occlusion

  • Positioning Mode: Set Positioning Mode to Track 3D Lights. Now, any Point Light in your After Effects 3D space will automatically generate a dynamic lens flare that shifts realistically as the camera rotates.
  • Dynamic Occlusion: Enable Foreground Occlusion so that when an actor or object passes between the camera and the light source, the flare naturally dims and disappears behind the silhouette.

Natural Color Integration

Never leave flares at full 100% white saturation. Use the Color from Source option or tint flares to match the warm amber or cold steel tones of your Raw Clips footage.
