Lighting Rules for Flawless Green Screen Extraction

90% of keying problems occur on set, not in editing software:

• Even Lighting: Light the green backdrop evenly so the waveform monitor shows a flat horizontal line across green channel luminance.
• Subject Separation: Position your actor at least 6–8 feet in front of the green screen to prevent green bounce light (spill) from reflecting onto their shoulders and hair.

Using Keylight 1.2 in After Effects

1. Apply Effect > Keying > Keylight (1.2).
2. Use the Screen Colour eyedropper to pick a green sample near the subject's hair.
3. Switch View from Final Result to Combined Matte. Adjust Screen Gain and Screen Balance so the background is solid pure black (0) and the subject is solid pure white (100).
4. Under Screen Matte, set Clip Black to 10 and Clip White to 90 to eliminate transparency noise.

Using Ultra Key in Premiere Pro

Apply Ultra Key, pick the green tone, and switch Setting from Default to Aggressive. Use Pedestal to clear dark floor shadows cleanly.

Building a Realistic Light Wrap

To blend keyed actors into new backgrounds, composite a subtle Light Wrap: blur the background plate and blend it over the actor's outer perimeter with Screen mode so environmental lighting wraps naturally around their silhouette.
