An overlay is any visual element (video, transparent PNG, graphic badge, or animation) placed on a secondary video track above your main timeline footage. Overlays allow you to layer B-roll, memes, lower thirds, and lighting textures without interrupting your primary audio dialogue.

Understanding Blend Modes in CapCut

Under Video > Basic > Blend Mode, choose the correct algorithm for your overlay source:

Step-by-Step Green Screen Chroma Keying

1. Import a green screen meme or VFX element from our Raw Clips Green Screen Section.
2. Place the green screen clip on the overlay track directly above your background video.
3. Go to Video > Cutout > Chroma Key.
4. Use the Color Picker eyedropper to click the green background in the preview window.
5. Increase Strength (typically 15–25) until the green disappears cleanly. Adjust Shadow (30–50) to recover subject edge contrast.

Picture-in-Picture & Split Screen Multi-Track Rigs

Use the Mask tool (Split, Filmstrip, or Circle) on overlay tracks to create side-by-side reaction videos or circular webcam talking-head bubbles over software demos.
