Professional Animation Workflows in After Effects: From Storyboard to Render

Phase 1: Pre-Production, Styleframes & Animatics

Professional animation never begins in a blank After Effects timeline. Establish styleframes in Illustrator or Photoshop, agree on a color palette, and create an animatic synced to your voiceover and scratch audio track.

Phase 2: Rough Blocking & Keyframe Timing

Set linear keyframes for primary layer transitions before touching easing curves:

• Focus strictly on composition rhythm and visual hierarchy.
• Ensure scene transitions occur on natural audio beats from your SFX and Music Library.

Phase 3: Easing Curves, Physics & Secondary Motion

Once timing is locked, refine keyframe velocities:

1. Apply cubic-bezier curves using Flow.
2. Add secondary motion (follow-through, slight rotational wobble, squash & stretch) with Motion Tools V2.
3. Incorporate atmospheric lighting using Deep Glow or subtle camera shakes.

Phase 4: Compositing, Grain & Master Delivery

Add a unified color grading pass using Magic Bullet Looks and fine 35mm grain to blend 2D and 3D layers cohesively. Export ProRes 422 masters via the Render Queue.
