Modern After Effects uses Multi-Frame Rendering to render multiple frames simultaneously across CPU cores. To maximize efficiency:
- CPU Core Allocation: Go to Preferences > Memory & Performance. Ensure "Enable Multi-Frame Rendering" is checked. AE will dynamically assign CPU threads based on composition complexity.
- RAM Reservation: For 32 GB systems, allocate 26 GB to Adobe and 6 GB to other apps. For 64 GB+ systems, allocate 52 GB to Adobe.

Disk cache speed determines how fast After Effects retrieves pre-rendered frames when scrubbing your timeline:

Using Smart Proxies for Heavy VFX and 4K Footage
Never apply heavy optical plugins (like Deep Glow or volumetric glass) directly over uncompressed 4K raw clips during the design phase:
- Right-click your source clip in the Project Panel > Create Proxy > Movie...
- Choose Apple ProRes 422 Proxy or GoPro CineForm at 50% resolution (1080p).
- Render the proxy. A small black square will appear next to the footage name, confirming proxy playback is active.
- Before final master export, After Effects automatically switches back to full-resolution source media without altering your effects.
Timeline & Project Hygiene Practices
Small structural habits compound into massive rendering gains:
- Trim Inactive Layer Handles: If a layer only appears for 2 seconds, press
Alt + [andAlt + ]to trim the in/out points so AE does not compute invisible alpha channels. - Mute Motion Blur During Rough Animation: Turn off composition-wide motion blur (
F4) until fine-tuning curves in the graph editor. - Use Adjustment Layer Region of Interest: Use the Region of Interest tool below the viewer to constrain previews to the specific graphic element being animated.

After Effects relies primarily on single-core and multi-core CPU performance for calculating geometry, expressions, and frame generation. The GPU accelerates specific effects (blurs, color grading, 3D plugins) and timeline display rendering.
